Competitive intelligence is one of the parts of modern special librarianship that consistently interests me the most - proven by the fact that a large percentage of the seminars I have marked for the summer SLA conference are on that very subject. Unfortunately, my position doesn’t call for much in the way of CI, instead focusing on mostly trade data and pricing. Nonetheless, I perk up anytime I see a competitive intelligence-related post in the biblioblogosphere.

Robert Berkman of the excellent and fairly new blog Intelligent Agent gives us his tips for using blogs for business research and competitive intelligence, using a combination of RSS and Technorati. Follow his six simple steps, and everyday you’ll be notified when your subject has been discussed in a blog. I think its a really cool idea, and I may give it a try despite the fact that it doesn’t have direct application in my usual work - perhaps I’ll try to use it to keep an eye on the chemistry and petroleum industries in the blogosphere.
